I apologize for the poor audio on the repeaters. One of our goals in this maintenance was to improve the audio but….it looks like I ended up in the wrong direction.
Fortunately I know what the problem is, and it’s a fairly simple fix. When we rewired the repeaters I chose to take receive audio from the Vertex Line Audio port. This port is after all the filtering and de-emphasis. But what the controller needs to see is flat audio. I can pick that up from another connection I’ve already provided, I just need to get to the site and make a quick wiring change. Of course I then need to readjust all the audio settings.
So it looks like another trip to the mountain is required, maybe an hour or two of work to be done. Then the audio should be just right. I’m not sure when I will be able to do this, maybe later in the week or on Saturday.
Last night Steven and I went to the site and fixed this. We now take discriminator audio from the VXR-7000 Accessory jack pin 6 and input that to the port on the repeater controller. While we were at it we reduced the volume of the repeater voice bringing it more in line with actual repeater audio.
I believe that the result is audio of much higher quality. Please let me know what you think of it. I’m sure there is still room for improvement. Your critique of the system is valuable.
